Festivals and traditions
The festivities of Canet d'en Berenguer
Throughout the year, Canet d’en Berenguer hosts several celebrations that bring dynamism, joy and entertainment to the town. All these festivities are full of symbolism and are a tradition for the residents of the town, as well as an important attraction for visitors. These are the most important festivities:
Sant Antoni (January)
San Antonio is considered the patron saint of animals and protector against natural disasters. His feast day, although officially celebrated on January 17, is extended in Canet with a series of events that include talks on animal care, the release of "bous al carrer", and a brotherhood dinner for more than 1,500 people. The festival concludes with the blessing of the animals, a procession through the streets of the municipality, and a lively medieval market.
Sant Joan (June)
The summer solstice, which coincides with the feast of San Juan on June 23, is a magical date in Canet d'en Berenguer. The beach of Canet is illuminated with hundreds of bonfires and dinners under the light of the full moon. At midnight, a fireworks display from the sea marks the beginning of the traditional foot bath, where legend has it that seven waves must be jumped to make a wish. The night culminates with music and dancing by a spectacular orchestra.
Sant Pere (June)
The festivities in honor of San Pedro, patron saint of Canet d'en Berenguer, are held at the end of June with events including "bous al carrer", verbenas and popular dinners. The mornings begin with traditional music and the musical society band, followed by a mass mass and a pyrotechnic "mascletà". In the afternoon, the procession of San Pedro goes through the decorated streets, ending with a fireworks display and a nightly musical show.
Virgin against Fevers (September)
The festivities in honor of the Virgin against Fevers originated in the 17th century, following the miraculous appearance of a picture of the virgin that healed the sick of the town. Since then, September 8 has been celebrated as a local day with a solemn procession and a series of events beginning on September 5. The festivities include bullfighting events, the "Plantà del pal", the "Tira de Colonia", the traditional "dansà", and numerous cultural and gastronomic activities, culminating on September 15 with a final fireworks display.
9 d'Octubre
October 9th, Day of the Valencian Community, commemorates the entry of King James I to Valencia in 1238. Canet d'en Berenguer joins this celebration with cultural and gastronomic events. The day includes art exhibitions, competitions of traditional activities and a beautifully decorated craft market. The day culminates with a civic procession, traditional dances, and an evening cultural show.
